About the Board

The Tapestry Public Charter School Governing Board seeks qualified individuals to apply for election to the Board. The mission of Tapestry Public Charter School is to offer an inclusive, individualized learning environment that is academically engaging, both for neurotypical students and those on the autism spectrum, and to create a positive school culture that empowers all students to take possession of their innate talents and become creative builders of their own futures.

The Tapestry Governing Board seeks to fill multiple Board positions for terms starting in July coinciding with the school’s July-June calendar year, with the possibility of an earlier start based on interest and availability. Initial Board commitment for elected Board members is two years.  

Tapestry is a public tuition-free DeKalb County charter school that serves students in middle school and high school in grades 6-12. Tapestry utilizes constructivist instructional methods driven by student interests to increase engagement, making learning relevant and enhancing each child’s ability to meet or exceed the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards. Tapestry’s curriculum features expeditionary learning with an emphasis on hands-on discovery, inquiry, critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration, and utilizes Universal Design for Learning (UDL) as a framework for differentiating instruction and providing curriculum access for all students. Tapestry’s highly qualified, mission-aligned teachers are innovative, positive, flexible, nurturing, and dedicated to the education of all students who aim to inspire and instill a love for learning in each of them.

The Governing Board is charged with carrying forth Tapestry’s mission and vision, governing academic and school performance, ensuring school compliance with applicable state and federal laws, and establishing and maintaining policy. Elected members can expect a base commitment of about 10 hours per month or more. Board members are expected to serve on at least one Committee (Governance, Development / Partnerships, Academic Excellence, and Finance).  Board service, including committee service, is voluntary and directors are not compensated.

Applicant Qualifications

The Tapestry Governing Board specifically seeks applicants with the following areas of expertise:

  • Education (middle and high school instruction & administration, diversity & inclusion, special education, transition, post-secondary, curriculum).
  • Community Board experience (including serving on a non-profit board and participating in the leadership and/or development of an educational or community organization).
  • Financial (including financial oversight and business management).
  • Autism (especially a self-advocate who is on the autism spectrum).

Additional preferences:

  • Strong communications skills.
  • Team player: diplomacy and consensus building.
  • Familiarity with autism spectrum disorders.
  • Willingness to eventually take a leadership role.
  • Proponent of charter schools.

Directors serve for a term of two years. Elections are held at the June Board meeting or ongoing throughout the year as necessary. If you have any questions, please email Amy Hilton, Governance Committee Chair. 

Candidates interested in serving on the Governing Board typically become active members of a Board Committee, prior to being elected to the Board. Committee participation provides prospective board members greater opportunity to engage and support the school on topics that align with their areas of expertise, learn more about the role and function of governing board members, and ensure board service aligns with the candidate’s goal to serve the Tapestry Charter School community.
